I was introduced to surrealism in my grade 11 Art class, and I remember that I loved it because of its uniqueness.
I typed “surrealism” into the google search bar for images and my eye caught this picture:
I remember being shown this picture in my Art class, and it really intrigued me. But since it has been two years I forgot about the artist himself as well as this painting. And so I did some research…
Salvador Dali was a prominent Spanish Catalan surrealist painter born in Figueres. Dalí was highly imaginative, and also had an affinity for partaking in unusual and grandiose behavior, in order to draw attention to himself. This sometimes irked those who loved his art as much as it annoyed his critics, since his eccentric manner sometimes drew more public attention than his artwork
And as for the painting above, The Persistence of Memory, was painten in 1931 and is known as his famous artwork. This painting introduced a surrealistic image of soft, melting pocket watches. The general interpretation of the work is that the soft watches are a rejection of the assumption that time is rigid or deterministic. This idea is supported by other images in the work, such as the wide expanding landscape, and the other limp watches, shown being devoured by insects
Wow! Check out that moustache and the eccentric pose! Quite a surrealist when taking pictures as well!
